Hi there! I’m Michelle, and I’m so glad you stopped by to check out my blog! 🙂
I’m not going to bore you with my whole life story because I’m sure you’ve got better things to do than read about how I won an art contest in 4th grade, so here’s the short and sweet version:
I am in my mid-40s and have been married to my hubby for 12+ years. We live on the same 46 acre tree crop farm that has been in my family for three generations. We don’t have children, but we do have several cats because we both love cats A LOT and end up keeping every stray that wonders onto our property. My hubby is an awesome general contractor (no bias there at all, really) and he built our dream house on the farm a few years ago. We’ve been working on the never-ending (but fun!) projects around our home and yard ever since. That got me thinking: why not start a blog and share some of the stuff we’re doing with everyone? And that’s how Bianchi’s Barn was born.
Now, I’m sure you’re saying to yourself: “Uh, Bianchi’s Barn? Isn’t this blog called The Painted Hinge?” It is now, but it started out as Bianchi’s Barn. If you’re interested, you can read about why I changed my blog name.
Why I Blog
As I mentioned earlier we built our own house and are doing our own decorating and landscaping. At first, we thought it was a GREAT idea- we can save a ton of money and do everything exactly the way we want it! Well, we quickly figured out with both of us working full time and then having the usual other-than-work obligations everyone does, it didn’t leave much time to work on home and garden projects.
At the same time, I was struggling with the toxic environment at my workplace. I’m a programmer and I love what I do in of itself, but the corporate politics and horrible management at my workplace were becoming too much to bear. It came down to either spending 20+ years in the corporate grind making great money, but not doing anything really meaningful and losing my soul in the process, or get out while I was still halfway young and use my skills to do stuff that is really fulfilling and enriches my life as well as others.
I took the plunge in mid 2012, quit my job, and never looked back! 🙂 What’s funny is I didn’t even have the idea of blogging at the time I quit… I didn’t start thinking about it until early 2013, and didn’t really get serious about it until mid 2014. I certainly don’t made the money I used to, but I feel 110% better, I’m rarely stressed out anymore, and I sleep like a log whereas before anxiety from work kept me up all night.
Long story short: I hate corporate politics, workplace bullies, and working at a job I hate because I had to make a living. But I love programming, home and garden stuff, and making a living while doing something I love and is positive and fulfilling, both for myself and my wonderful, awesome readers.
So here I am. 🙂
And yes, I do make money blogging. Some bloggers are apologetic about that, but honestly, I see no reason to be. Yes, I love blogging, I enjoy doing all the projects and sharing them with my readers, but I do want to make money too, and I see nothing wrong with that. What could be wrong with doing what I love, providing free, informative content for my like-minded readers, and making a few bucks to boot? I see it as win-win for everyone! 🙂 I still do some freelance programming on the side and I might sell some things on eBay or Etsy for some extra money, but for the most part this blog is my full time job, so of course if I’m putting that much time into it, I want to make some money in the process. What’s great about it is for the most part I’m working on home and garden projects I’d want to get done around here even if I didn’t blog about it, so I’m killing two birds with one stone so to speak! 🙂
Thanks again for stopping by! I hope to see you again soon! 🙂
