Another Messy Bun Hat Crochet Pattern

Another Messy Bun Hat Crochet Pattern

Hey Friends! 🙂 I really love the messy bun hat trend as I love to wear them! I always loved the warmth of a crocheted hat, but hated how there would be a big lump under the hat where my hair bun was.

As you can guess by the title of this post, I’ve already made a messy bun hat pattern which you can find here. but I love Lion Brand Homespun yarn as it is so warm and soft, so I had to make another messy bun hat pattern using it!

This pattern is really easy to work up as the most complicated stitch is HDC2TOG (crochet 2 half double crochet stitches together). There are several ways to do the HDC2TOG, and several tutorials online that will show you how.

This pattern is meant to be a one size fits most for women. This hat fits nicely on me, but I do have a largish head (7 5/8 hat size) so this pattern might be a little loose on more petite women. I will give some tips on how to adjust the pattern for size at the end of the pattern.

Materials:

  • 1 Skein Lion Brand Homespun Yarn in Tudor where to buy
  • Crochet hook in US L/11 8.0 mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

This post contains Amazon affiliate links for your convenience to help you find the yarn I used to make this pattern. I make a small commission if you order through my links, but it doesn’t cost you anything more! If you do, thank you! ?

Stitch Guide:

  • CH = chain
  • ST = stitch
  • CH ST – chain stitch
  • HDC = half double crochet
  • HDC2TOG = half double crochet 2 stitches together
  • SL ST = slip stitch

Directions:

Chain 59; sl st ch together to form a loop.
Round 1: Ch 1; hdc in each ch st; sl st round together.
Round 2: Ch 1; hdc in each st; sl st round together.
Round 3: Ch 1; (hdc in next 15 st; hdc2tog); repeat between ( ) until end of round; sl st round together.
Round 4: hdc in each st; sl st round together.
Round 5: Ch 1; (hdc in next 8 st; hdc2tog); repeat between ( ) until end of round; sl st round together.
Round 6: hdc in each st; sl st round together.
Round 7: Ch 1; (hdc in next 7 st; hdc2tog); repeat between ( ) until end of round; sl st round together.
Round 8: hdc in each st; sl st round together.
Round 9: Ch 1; (hdc in next 6 st; hdc2tog); repeat between ( ) until end of round; sl st round together.
Round 10: hdc in each st; sl st round together.
Round 11: Ch 2; (hdc in next 5 st; hdc2tog); repeat between ( ) until end of round; sl st round together.
Round 12: Ch 2; (hdc in next 4 st; hdc2tog); repeat between ( ) until end of round; sl st round together.
Round 13: Ch 2; (hdc in next 3 st; hdc2tog); repeat between ( ) until end of round; sl st round together.
Cut yarn, tie off, and weave in ends.

To size this hat, chain stitch 50 stitches and then wrap the chain around the head of the person the hat is intended for. What you are shooting for is the chain fitting snugly (but not tightly) around the person’s head with a little bit of stretch in the chain. Once you get the chain adjusted, crochet the first couple of rounds and test the fit again. If it is too tight or loose, rip out the rounds, adjust the chain, and work the first two rounds again. Once you get the fit desired, work the rest of the pattern as written.
