Swivel Chairs and the Art of Flexible Living

Swivel Chairs and the Art of Flexible Living

Homes these days aren’t designed for a single, specific purpose.

Quite the contrary—more than ever, our spaces need to be adaptable at a moment’s notice. From weekday morning coffee to busy nights spent hosting guests, living rooms must go with the flow… wherever that may take you. And in the new era of flexibility, there’s one quietly reliable seating solution that can both lull you into flow and transport you: the swivel chair.

Capable of responding as you do, swivel chairs are an easygoing addition to any space that offers motion, style, durability, and necessary utility—all without taking up too much space in a room. And if you’re a household that plays host to lively conversations and relaxation alike, a revolving gem can easily be a perfect furniture choice for any room.

Early in the design process, a number of clients turn to the marketplace of prepared swivel chairs to determine the role shape, fabric, and scale play in a room. More than a single swivel can demonstrate whether season-specific beachy lounge-style is the best choice for a client’s living room, or if a sculptural statement chair in a slightly dressed teal velvet is more in keeping with the client’s goals.

There are some brands that have done a lot to elevate this idea — Serena & Lily offers a relaxed, lifestyle view of luxury that offers a sort of freedom from too much giant furniture, whether the home or aesthetic leans toward traditional or tidy bohemianism.

How Movement Shifts the Vibe in a Room

Swivel chairs are all about one thing: movement. Usually, when you’re nestled into an armchair, you’re, well, nestled. But swiveling gives you the freedom to face the person you’re talking to, the view, or the screen without moving the whole chair.

This simple detail makes a room work harder—even if you don’t consciously think about it, adding more flexibility, ease, and informality into a space. And that’s especially nice in open-plan homes where living rooms and dining rooms and kitchens often intermingle.

For one, moving is always better. Objects that move with and around us are typically more effective at keeping us present. If you’re present, you’re more likely to stick around. So, in that sense, a swivel chair — a device that verbally translates to the question of, ‘can you stay for a while?’ — is thoroughly preferable to the much more stationary, ala-face the computer, save-the-body-across-the-desk affair.

Comfort Designed for Everyday Living

Nothing says “good design” like a well-designed swivel chair. Decent cushioning, nice, high backs, no hard edges — that’s the kind of thing we’re talking about here, and all with a purpose behind it. These chairs were all designed to be sat in for a little bit longer than the two minutes it probably took to ready yourself a cup of coffee or grab a glass of wine to go along with your conversation.

Be it reading a story to your kids, having an intimate conversation with a sister or BFF, or just sitting and taking a deep breath, these are the chairs you’ll be sitting in for a while.

In a home…well, there’s honestly no greater gift. On the family room floor, these swivel chairs will end up the hottest seat in the house. Offer seemingly endless comfort, with plenty of wiggle-room to spin your way out of a bad mood.

Scale, Balance, and Placement

For starters, swivel chairs make great use of small and tight spaces. Use just one in a corner area found in plenty of living rooms to create a spot for reading or relaxing, or place a pair around a coffee table to form an intimate conversation area. The way their rounded shape contrasts with the straight edges of a bookcase or a wall can break up a space.

But like every other versatile taskmaster of decor, they only work their magic when you put them in the right place. When you put them by a window, the sitter can take advantage of natural light, but at nightfall, the chair can swivel back as you turn your focus into the room. In an open floor plan, a swivel chair can become your right arm, allowing you to hang out in the kitchen while keeping an eye on a TV or talking to a person lounging in another section.

Timeless Appeal in a Changing Home

As trends in room décor come and go, a piece of furniture that feels good to be in and easy to adapt almost always remains in style. For our money, a swivel chair is just such a piece. If you choose one that works for you in any home, whether you change places every few years or even if you simply like to rearrange every season, a swivel can slide right into the new décor without missing a beat in terms of function or form.

But this is not the whole story of what makes swivel chairs so special. They add a little something extra to everyday living. When we slide a chair effortlessly to face someone speaking, or simply swivel the chair on our own to shift gaze or focus, it brings just a bit more responsiveness and comfort into the space. In homes that are more playful in their approach to living, chairs that can offer the gift of swivel make a big difference to how a space really works.
