Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial

Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial Hey! 🙂 I’ve been really getting into the Shabby Chic look lately, and I wanted to spread some of the love onto my fall decorating. I am a big nut over “traditional” fall colors, so it was kinda hard to restrain myself to neutrals for this project, but I managed somehow. 😉

Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 11″ x 13″ picture frame
  • 12″ x 14″ piece of chicken wire
  • wire cutters
  • tacks
  • small hammer
  • needle nose pliers
  • FolkArt Chalk Paint in White Aridionack where to buy
  • FolkArt clear sealing wax where to buy
  • paint brushes
  • 4 mini clothespins
  • 4 – 3″ x 4″ wood framed chalkboards where to buy
  • chalk ink
  • 2″ x 10′ burlap ribbon
  • 18″ jute twine
  • 1 silk sunflower
  • white potpourri mix
  • glue gun & glue
  • scissors

1. Cut the chicken wire to cover the entire back of the frame. Tack the chicken wire to the back of the frame, leaving enough space at the top for the burlap ribbon strip for hanging up the finished project. Bend back any protruding pieces of wire with the needle nose pliers so you don’t get poked!Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial 2. Turn the frame over and paint it along with the chicken wire. I gave the frame two coats of chalk paint, a coat of sealing wax, and distressed it with 80 grit sandpaper. I gave the chicken wire just one coat of white chalk paint to get a chippy look.Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial As you can see, I painted the frame before I tacked the chicken wire to the back of it. In hindsight, it would have been easier to tack the chicken wire on first, then paint the frame and wire at the same time. Also (I’m probably going to lose my Craft Card for admitting this) this is the very first time I’ve used chalk paint. On anything. Ever. And I love it. 🙂 I can’t wait to use it on future projects! Here’s the frame before pic:Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial And the after:Shabby Chic Fall Wreath TutorialNot too shabby for my first time, huh? (Well, it is shabby, as in Shabby Chic, but you know what I mean). 🙂 3. Make a bow out of the burlap ribbon and tie it on using the jute twine. You can hot glue the ribbon on as well, but I tied mine on so if I decide to use the frame for another project in the future, it will be easy to remove. Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial 4. Arrange and hot glue the silk sunflower and potpourri pieces onto the ribbon. If the potpourri weighs the ribbon down in places, use a tiny drop of hot glue on back of the ribbon to secure it to the frame.Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial 5. Paint the clothespins. I just gave them a quick coat of chalk paint. I clipped a piece of paper to make them easier to maneuver while painting.Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial 6. Letter the chalkboards and pin to the chicken wire with the clothespins. Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial 7. Hang your wreath up and enjoy!Shabby Chic Fall Wreath Tutorial The beauty of this wreath is you can always change what you pin or hang on the chicken wire to suit your mood and the seasons. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them below! Michelle

Thank you Jess! I thought the same thing about it being a year round or “all purpose” wreath 🙂 The clothespins make it super easy to switch up what’s hung on the chicken wire.

What a great project! I love the distressed look and the chicken wire. The burlap bow and flower add a little femininity. Great project. Could use for a message board to attach notes with clips or even use it on your front door for a wreath/greeting. It would be cute with a “welcome” sign across the corner! You did a super job! I like any project where I can upcycle/recycle or repurpose an object.
