I’ll never forget the morning I padded barefoot across the living room and felt it. The floor wasn’t flat anymore.
Running my hand along the planks, I could trace little ridges where the boards had started curling up at the edges, creating these subtle waves across what used to be smooth, gorgeous old pine.

Figuring Out What Was Actually Happening

The characteristic “U” shape of a cupped floor happens when the sides of the boards curl up, and high indoor humidity is one of the most common causes, as wood floorboards absorb moisture from the air and swell. Wood is basically a sponge.
In high humidity, your wood floors will absorb more moisture, causing them to expand and cup.
So there I was, staring at my beautiful old floors, trying to decide what to do. Should I try to fix them myself? Call someone? Rip everything out and start over? I grabbed a hygrometer from the hardware store and started taking readings around the house. Sure enough, we were sitting at around 65% humidity inside on most days.
Indoor relative humidity should be kept below 60 percent, ideally between 30 percent and 50 percent, according to EPA guidelines.
That’s when I realized this wasn’t a quick fix. The floors needed to dry out first, and I needed to get the humidity under control, or whatever repair I did would just fail again in a few months. I bought a decent dehumidifier and ran it constantly for about six weeks, checking the moisture levels in the wood every week with a little pin-style meter I borrowed from a neighbor.
Watching the readings slowly drop was weirdly satisfying. The cupping started to flatten out a little on its own as the boards released that trapped moisture.
But some sections, especially near the bathroom and the kitchen, weren’t bouncing back. I had to make a call: try sanding and refinishing, replace the worst boards, or just live with it and see if it got worse.

I also learned that this isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it thing. Now I keep that dehumidifier running from late spring through early fall, and I monitor the indoor humidity religiously. I set up a smart hygrometer that sends me alerts if things creep above 55%.
It sounds obsessive, but after spending what I spent on repairs, I’m not taking chances.
Another thing that helped was sealing up the crawl space properly. We added a vapor barrier down there and improved the ventilation, which made a massive difference. The installer recommended it, and honestly, I wish I’d done it years ago.

Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t try to DIY the whole thing. I probably would have sanded too soon, or missed the subfloor issue entirely, and ended up right back where I started. Sometimes it’s worth calling in people who know what they’re doing, especially when you’re dealing with old wood and a challenging climate.

Catching this stuff early makes all the difference. I learned that the hard way, but at least now my floors are protected, and I know what to watch for going forward.
